INTRODUCTION
At Links, the purpose of homework is to support the teaching and learning process. We believe that homework is a crucial part of education and intellectual development; it encourages individual learning, differentiation and self-discipline. Homework is an integral part of the learning process and must be given due attention by students as well as parents and teachers.
Homework allows students to revise their understanding of key concepts and ideas, while at the same time develop research and creative skills. Homework has many purposes: sometimes it provides review and at other times it provides practice. It can be an extension of a classroom activity that is then used the next day to further a discussion; for some children, homework includes finishing a project they did not have time to complete in school.
It is important to let children grapple with their homework as they develop learning skills and self-discipline. Homework should generally be done independently. Although teachers describe the homework to the children at the close of each day, some children may need a family member to direct them accordingly.
You should encourage your child to show completed homework to you. It is important for families to help children establish regular, predictable routines for home study. You should work with your child to find a quiet, consistent place for study. You should also determine a time of day that is consistent and works well with your family schedule.
Homework is an integral part of the learning process and must be given due attention by students as well as parents.
HOMEWORK DIARIES
All students will be issued homework diaries at the beginning of the school year, which will list the daily homework and any special instructions / notices. A parent on a daily basis must sign this homework diary. All homework must be sent back to school the following day, along with the homework diary. This homework diary will also serve as an effective means of communication between parents and the teacher.
Parents are asked to support homework where it is given, and to maintain open communication with staff wherever problems need to be discussed.
HOMEWORK TIMETABLE
At the beginning of each term, a Homework Timetable is devised and reviewed by the Head teacher along with each subject / class teachers. The aim of the Homework Timetable is to ensure that a balanced and comprehensive scheme of work is being assigned keeping in mind age groups / capabilities, subjects and time frames.
Approximate Hours: Homework is assigned according to class level and age groups.
FAILURE TO COMPLETE HOMEWORK SATISFACTORILY (uptill class 5)
- Where a student has attempted homework but failed to complete it, the teacher may need to consider what additional support or coaching the student might need to understand tasks.
- Poorly presented homework or incomplete homework, due to insufficient effort or time put aside for studies, will be addressed through discussion with the teacher.
- Where students continue to submit work indicating a lack of effort or work well below the standard of their capabilities, the teacher will treat the work in the same way as homework not done.
LINKS POLICY – HOMEWORK NOT DONE (for class 6 onwards)
As homework is vital, we take the issue seriously:
- For ‘one-offs’, where the student has a fine record of doing homework, the teacher need only talk to the student and collect in the work the next day.
- For students ill, absent or facing social or physical problems that the school is aware of, special provisions are employed (including a waiver). Such a student will probably need to spend their time catching up on Class work and Homework.
- There is a staged procedure for students who persistently fail to complete their homework. We try to work with the student by setting clear targets and will seek parental support in helping the student improve.
- Students will be made to complete incomplete homework / classwork either during Break / P..E/ Music / Library periods or sit for detention after school on that very day.
For after school detention, parents will be informed via telephone.
- If the student continues to submit incomplete homework he/she will be sent home and will have to complete the assignment in order to attend school the next day.
- If a student does not submit class work / homework copies on time, their work will not be checked or marked. (Only absent students who have a genuine excuse will be exempted).
- If students scribble, draw or write irrelevant notes in their copies or assessment papers, marks will be deducted.
